NEW at J. Parham Dentistry — EMFACE® for TMJ Dysfunction
First in Northwest Arkansas to offer this FDA-cleared, non-invasive muscle-based therapy for jaw pain & dysfunction.
What is EMFACE®?
- EMFACE® combines synchronized radiofrequency (RF) heating + HIFES® (High Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) to stimulate facial/masticatory muscles and surrounding tissue.
- For TMJ dysfunction, the protocol is adjusted to target the relevant muscles (masseter, temporalis, etc.) and the joint/muscle complex.
- The RF component helps relax muscle spasms, improve local circulation, heat tissue; HIFES® retrains muscle activity, increases muscle tone/density, supports improved muscle function.
Why this matters for TMJ dysfunction (TMD):
- According to TMD research, a large proportion of TMD / TMJ dysfunction presentations involve muscle disorders (myalgia, myofascial pain) vs purely intra-articular/joint issues. For example: muscle‐related disorders ~45% in studied populations.
- Traditional treatments often focus on splints, medications, injections, or surgery. EMFACE® provides a non-surgical, non-invasive muscle therapeutic option for TMD.
- For patients with jaw pain, muscle spasms, difficulty opening/closing, or clenching/bruxism contributing to TMD, EMFACE® may offer targeted relief by addressing the muscle component.
Typical protocol & what to expect:
- The standard aesthetic EMFACE® protocol: 4 sessions (each ~20 minutes), weekly spacing is typical.
- For the functional TMJ application: custom-protocol may be 4-6 sessions (20 minutes each) depending on severity.
- Minimal discomfort: Patients feel gentle muscle contractions + warming sensation. No needles, little to no downtime.
- Results: Many patients report improvement in pain/spasm and jaw mobility after completion of the series; some relief may begin earlier.
Clinical / Regulatory Status
- On Aug 13, 2025, BTL Industries announced that EMFACE® had received FDA clearance for the indication of TMJ dysfunction (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) including relief of muscle spasm, associated pain, improved range of motion, increased local blood flow.
- Official manufacturer site confirms: “Non-invasive treatment for TMJ dysfunction … relieved symptoms of muscle spasm … treated TMJ dysfunction … increased mandibular range of motion.”
