Dental emergencies are not fun, especially if you’ve experienced one away from home. They can be quite scary and even overwhelming. However, there is no need to panic. Everything will be OK. Fortunately, there are many dental treatments and professionals that can help you. If you have knocked a tooth out away from home, our dentist, Dr. James S. Parham, would like to give you some tips to help you through the situation.

First, call a local dental office and schedule an emergency appointment. Explain the situation to the dental team so they know exactly what to expect when you arrive at their office. Also, if possible, take care of any paperwork over the phone before you visit. This is recommended because you don’t want to be waiting in the waiting room with a knocked-out tooth.

Second, pick the tooth up by the crown, which was the visible portion of the tooth when it was still in your mouth. Then, rinse the tooth with warm water. Whatever you do, do not scrub it! Scrubbing it can remove the necessary tissues that help your tooth live.

Third, try to put the tooth back into place—make sure it’s facing forward. All you need to do is reinsert it into the jawbone. If this isn’t possible, make sure to keep the tooth between your gums and cheek, in a glass of milk, or in a tooth-preservation product. Doing these things can keep the tooth alive until you see the dentist. It’s important to get the tooth back into place within an hour of it being knocked out.
